The volume examines unpublished materials from surface deposits already largely known from previous works. The aim is to provide a reinterpretation of the most ancient population of the eastern Bologna area from the final phases of the upper Pleistocene up to the Copper Age and to highlight the crucial role played above all by the hills throughout the course of the Middle Paleolithic, starting from the most archaic phases. This objective is pursued through a synthesis of the various deposits, including a brief description of the historical collections already known in the literature, followed by a detailed analysis of the various unpublished stone ensembles, developed according to a techno-economic approach. The volume is introduced by a historical excursus on palethnological research and the first population of the eastern Bologna area and concludes with a series of summary considerations on the lithic industries of the various areas examined (Palesio, Castel San Pietro and Toscanella) and of the operational chains of Middle Paleolithic ensembles, which represent the most significant corpus of the collections in question.
