This collection of images, unknown to the general public and, perhaps, to the
most of the Sardinians themselves, re-proposes an important moment in our prehistory, the third millennium BC, in which the art of the domus de janas developed.
Subject of scientific research extended to the entire island and still in progress,
this art is slowly revealing itself, with the progress of the exploration of the territory, in its figurative and technical aspects, showing itself to be refined and original, very varied, rich and interesting.
It allows us to glimpse the organization in its essential lines
social, the economy and, in particular, the funeral and religious ideology of
communities that lived during the culture of S. Michele and the culture of Filigosa (Recent Neolithic and Copper Age).
The need to make certain scientific results known to a vast public
of such research, known only to a small circle of scholars, resulted
the Provincial Administration of Sassari to identify in the preparation of the photographic exhibition The art of domus de janas in the images of Ingeborg Mangold and in the publication of this catalog the most incisive and simplest form of data transmission.
All this bears witness to the constant commitment of the intermediate body
in the rediscovery and enhancement of all the distant, recent and present aspects of the future of the populations of the territory.
We are, therefore, sure that this monographic catalog will meet the approval not only of scholars and experts, but above all that of young people, women, workers and learners to whom, in particular, it is intended.
On the other hand, the preparation of the photographic exhibition on the art of the domus
de janas and the publication of this work are in harmony with the need to record and document every culturally and socially significant initiative over time.
As undoubtedly is this too.
